DAILY MIRROR ARTICLE
You may well have seen the article which appeared in The Daily Mirror yesterday following the publication of the National attainment and progress statistics.
It is important to note that all statistics and league tables about Chetwynde School are currently based on only a proportion of our students and are therefore meaningless when assessing our pupil progress.
The national attainment and progress statistics were published this week and Chetwynde finds itself in the lower end of the table of schools for Progress8.
What is not clear however is the unique position schools which have converted from private fee-paying status find themselves in with regard to these stats. Progress8 is based on pupils’ SATs scores. As an independent school (before 2014), Chetwynde pupils did not sit SATs. Therefore 31% of our Year 11s who left us last summer did not count at all in the Progress8 data.
These young people had made steady progress from a very young age with us, did very well in exams and have gone on to colleges and apprenticeships and yet do not count at all in the data. The 69% who do count came at various points of entry, many as late as Year 10 or 11 after presumably not being happy in other schools.
Having a significant number of pupils who simply do not count in Progress8 will affect Chetwynde for another two years, after which we will have full cohorts with SATs information. The picture then will be representative and fair.
