After weeks of rehearsals, the day finally came for the Infant and Kindergarten Christmas performance of “Mother Christmas”. In the story Mother Christmas, played by Isabelle Helme, and the elves persuade Father Christmas to swap roles. He will stay at home to make the dinner and get everything ready and she will deliver the presents. Mother Christmas’ journey then takes her around the world including visits to North American Indians and to Chinese workers in a tea garden. As she travels, she checks back and finds Father Christmas, played by Samuel Ireland, is none too pleased with the amount he has to do!

The children performed brilliantly, with each group performing their own little song and dance, including thigh slapping in Switzerland and Zumba in Columbia. Kindergarten, of course, provided the usual finale with a nativity scene. They came on stage to sing some carols with their friends to remind us of the real meaning of Christmas.

Although this is always a very busy term academically, we are also pleased to announce that our pupils, with the help of their teachers and parents, have already raised nearly £1400 for various charities. Some we do every year; the traditional “Jeans for Genes” non-uniform day raised over £280, Year 6 organised activities among the Primary classes which raised £177 for Children in Need, and our Poppy Appeal raised over £90. Year 6 produced a wonderful display for Poppy Day too. The proceeds from the Sixth Form concert again went to support the work of The Rainbow Trust, which provides emotional and practical support for families who have a child with a life threatening or terminal illness. A new venture this year was to hold a coffee afternoon for Macmillan Cancer support, on the day in September when they hold their “biggest coffee morning”. This was very well supported and raised £472 in connection with their form assembly, two classes combined research and presentation skills with fundraising. 7JD raised £140 for the RSPCA through a raffle and a cake sale. 8KG gave a thoughtful assembly on whether it was better to support British charities or send our money overseas, and then held an exciting auction which raised £73.50. This they decided to split between Children in Need and CHIKS, (Children’s Home In Kerala State) a small charity which they were told about by Mrs Skinner.

We have also had the opportunity to give in kind. The harvest goods made a splendid display, and then were given to Barrow and District Age Concern and to Barrow Society for the Blind. Many pupils again took part in the Shoebox Appeal; challenged this year to see if we could break our record and give over 100 boxes, our pupils rose to the occasion as usual, and 107 boxes are now on their way. The thank you letter we received says that our boxes may well go to the Crimea, and that in the New Year, there will be stories of those who have received boxes on their website, www.samaritans-purse.org.uk .

We would like to express our thanks to all our parents and friends who have helped us with this important part of the work of our school.

Years 1 and 2 made some Christmas puddings with Mrs Brewer. This was to celebrate “Stir Up Sunday” which is held on the Sunday before Advent. All the children had a “stir” which tradition says must be from East to West, in honour of the Three Wise Men. The children learned many more interesting facts about Christmas Puddings before Mrs Brewer took them away for steaming. The puddings reappeared the next day, individually wrapped and ready for the children to take home.
