My Work Experience in France

Mon stage en France

J’étudie le français pour mon baccalauréat, donc je tenais à visiter la France pour améliorer mon français. Madame Young a organisé un stage à Nantes pendant les grandes vacances et donc j’ai passé une semaine à DCNS Indret, (l’équivalent de BAE Systems, mais en France). 

Pendant mon séjour à Nantes, je suis restée avec une famille française, (les parents travaillent à DCNS Indret), c’était un moyen fantastique pour expériencer la cuisine et la culture française, et au même temps j’ai beaucoup amélioré ma connaissance du français ‘domestique’. A  DCNS Indret, j’ai eu l’occasion de voir les hangars de construction où tous les éléments des sous-marins sont construits, je suis entrée dans une partie déjà complète d’un sous-marin et c’était étonnant ! J’ai visité les ingénieurs, l’équipe  de conception et les laboratoires de testes, mais le meilleur moment c’était sans doute quand j’ai visité une salle blanche où les réacteurs nucléaires pour les sous-marins sont construits, c’est un environnement stérile, et normalement les visiteurs y sont interdits, même les employés de DCNS, donc j’avais vraiment de la chance.

J’ai rencontré beaucoup de gens, et bien que le français fût très technique et vraiment rapide, je m’y suis habituée assez rapidement, et j’ai commencé à comprendre de plus en plus. Quand  je n’étais pas à DCNS, j’ai passe le temps avec ma famille française ; j’ai eu une pique-nique, j’ai visité les Machines d’Iles à Nantes – une exhibition des machines comme la tarentule énorme qu’on a vu à Liverpool. Il y avait un éléphant méchanique qui mesure 12m, il marche, il déplace son tronc et il gicle l’eau aux gens – c’était incroyable !.  Il y avait aussi une collection de créatures marines qui fonctionnent dans beaucoup de moyens différents.  C’était un peu bizarre, et vraiment dans le style de  Jules Verne!

Je recommanderais un voyage au pays qui parle dans une langue cible parce que j’ai trouvé  mon expérience vraiment utile. Après seulement une semaine d’ immersion dans la langue française je suis devenue plus confiante et j’ai parlé plus couramment.  En retournant en Angleterre je pensais toujours en français, et j’ai commencé à parler naturellement en français – très bizarre! Je resterais en contact avec mes hôtes en France, une famille très chaleureuse et généreuse envers moi.

Je voudrais dire « merci beaucoup » à Mme Young et à Mikael Kerhoas, qui a coordonné mon stage en France car c’était superbe et très bénéfique. 

My Work Experience in France

As an A-level French student, I was keen to visit France in order to improve my French. Madame Young organised a work experience placement for me in Nantes during the Summer holidays and I spent a week at DCNS Indret, the French equivalent of BAE Systems.

Whilst in Nantes, I stayed with a family whose parents worked at DCNS Indret, which was a fantastic way for me to experience the French cuisine and culture, as well as improve on my ‘domestic’ French. At DCNS Indret, I had the opportunity to see the building sheds where all the different submarine elements are built; I was able to actually go inside one ‘morsel’ of a submarine that had been completed and it was stunning. I visited the engineers, design team and the testing labs, but the highlight for me was definitely when I was allowed to go inside the ‘white room’, where the nuclear reactors for the submarines are built, it’s a sterile environment that usually doesn’t allow any visitors, even employees so I was very lucky. I met so many people, and although the French was very technical and extremely fast, I soon found myself adapting and beginning to understanding more and more. When I wasn’t at DCNS, I was spending time with my French family, having a picnic, visiting the “Machines d’Iles” in Nantes – an exhibition similar to the giant tarantula in Liverpool, where there was a 12m tall mechanical elephant that walks, moves its trunk and squirts water, as well as a collection of sea creatures that all move in a variety of different ways. A bit bizarre and very Jules Verne! 

I would recommend visiting any country that speaks an individual’s target language, because it’s just so beneficial. After just one week of being immersed in the French language and culture, I became more confident and fluent – I actually returned home thinking in French, and I’d begun to start to answer automatically in French! I will keep in contact with my host family who were warm and generous towards me.
