Chetwynde pupils to represent Cumbria in UK Maths Challenge

On Wednesday 12th March four students represented the school in the Regional Finals of the UK Maths Team challenge.
At the start of the spring term pupils had been competing in the inter-house maths team challenges. As a result Joseph Barton, Jonathan Blain, Matthew Pennelum and Tiffany Charnley were selected to represent the school in the UK Maths Challenge.

On Wednesday 12th March these brave four went on to represent the school in the Regional Finals of the competition along with representitives from fourteen schools from all over Cumbria. After showing excellent communication skills and team work in the Group Round and Cross Number it was announced that Chetwynde were in first place with Casterton and Dowdales close behind.

The next round was the daunting head to head where pupils had to find sequences in the number patterns, calculate the answer, and say their answer whilst all the other pupils watched and listened. The team again held their nerve and all scored excellent marks for the team.

The final round was the relay in which pupils had to work in pairs answering questions as quickly as possible. After this the results were collated and positions announced in reverse order, with third place St. Bees, second place Ulverston Victoria High, and First Place Chetwynde.

The team have now qualified to represent Cumbria in the National Maths Team Challenge in London at the Camden Centre on Monday 23rd June and we wish them every success.

Sixth Form Student to visit St James' Palace

Lindsay McCrae, one of our Upper Sixth students has just received an invitation to attend St James' Palace next month in order to receive his Gold Award Certificate form the Duke of Edinburgh.
Lindsay is our youngest student to complete this prestigious and challenging award and he thoroughly deserves his success. The photograph shows Lindsay standing above Wastwater on one of the expeditions, the challenges of which match the school ethos so well.

Chetwynde students are encouraged to start the Gold Award in Year 11 so that they can complete it before the pressure of final exams and this, of course, means that they are able to include their participation on UCAS forms. A further four students in the Upper Sixth have now completed their awards and many more are on schedule to do so within the coming months.

Catering staff win national award

It is true that our aim at Chetwynde is to do everything as well as we can, no matter what that may be and that includes our catering team. Last year, we were delighted that Mrs Sue Wood won the Sodexho Employee of the Year. This year our team has gone a step further in beating all the other independent schools in the group to become ‘Team of the Year'. This is no mean achievement given that schools like Westminster are amongst the competitors.

We congratulate them wholeheartedly on a very well-deserved award. Their dedication to the school and their constant efforts to develop the service they offer are much appreciated.

Chetwynde students achieve superb exam results.

We are delighted to report that this year's examination results have been amongst the best ever.

At Advanced Level, our students gained a 98% pass rate with an impressive 50% of the grades at A and B. All the students were accepted at their first choice universities which is a phenomenal achievement. Every year is different and whilst last year's group was very science orientated, this year's students have opted for a wide range of other courses, including History, Politics and Engineering.

We are delighted that they have maintained the school's excellent record for successful university applications.

The GCSE students matched the Upper Sixth this year with 98.3% of pupils passing at least five subjects at grades A*-C. In addition, 49% of those passes were at grades A* and A. This, in itself, is impressive and represents a tremendous achievement. However, we are particularly delighted this year to report that 97% of pupils gained five GCSE passes including English and Maths. Our top three pupils were Lucy Binfield, Theo Willison-Parry and Guy Murray with a staggering 30 A* grades between them. Guy is also to be congratulated on his GCSE Geography result. Out of 12,839 candidates, Guy achieved one of the highest marks overall.

Last year, for the first time, all schools were forced to publish their examination results including Maths and English. This followed increasing speculation that improving pass rates disguised a rather different trend, and so it proved. At Chetwynde, however, all the subjects pupils study are genuine GCSE academic examinations, all pupils are expected to study a modern language and either two or three separate sciences. It is also worth remembering that the pupils have a very wide range of ability; they are not all high flying academics.

We hope you are as proud as we are of these excellent results. Well done to you all!

Pictures courtesy of the North-West Evening Mail
