Extra-curricular Sport & Outdoor Pursuits
Here at Chetwynde we recognise that involvement in sport is an important element in a first class education. Through sport pupils learn to work together as a team and so develop an understanding of the importance of responsibility, commitment and discipline.
Extra- curricular sessions support sports lessons and enthusiastic attendance contributes to the outstanding success the school achieves in all sports.
Given the countryside on our doorstep, it is not surprising that the school makes the most of it. Therefore, alongside the wide ranging sporting programme, we also ensure that children get a taste of the great outdoors.
In Years 7 and 8 pupils are offered several opportunities to sample various pursuits such as climbing, mountain biking and canoeing on days out, week-ends and a week-long residential in the heart of the Lake District. Then, in Year 9 pupils begin their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award which includes a camping expedition. In the Sixth Form, students move on to the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award and enjoy many more opportunities to experience off site activities like sailing, windsurfing, abseiling etc.
The outdoor programme is led by enthusiastic and experienced staff who are well supported by their colleagues on residentials and expeditions. In the interests of safety, the school uses well-established providers eg Outward Bound, where expert instructors and high quality equipment are available.
